This article is an effort by Dr. As`ad, a renowned leader of Islamic education, to guide those who seek to attain Ihsan (God-consciousness). The article starts with explaining the concept of Ihsan. It then moves on to describe some examples about how one can achieve Ihsan through actions. Nafs is the life force of man, which is the centre that directs all our movements and desires and speaks and acts for us (Qur'an 50:45); it is like a partner in business and works as a partner with us on Earth. It has eyes and ears on its own; it follows our orders; we do not have to think about what we want it to do — it does everything automatically. It obeys our commands and it can be a force for good or evil. Man, however, is responsible for controlling the nafs and directing it to do permissible acts. Allah has given us free choice to choose what we want to do with the nafs. In this article, Qur'anic verses serve as examples that illustrate how one can achieve Ihsan through actions.
